Classic French design is beautiful in this three piece mantel clock garniture set. The clock and candelabras all have marble bases.
The clock has a sculpture "La Nuit" or Night, signed by famous French sculptor, "Hip. Moreau." Hippolyte Francois Moreau (1832-1927) was a prominent member of the famous French family of sculptors. Born in Dijon, he worked mostly in Paris, where he won a medal at the Universal Exposition or World's Fair of 1900. His work is found in museums around the world, a statue is on the facade of the Paris city hall or "Hotel de Ville."
The clock has its original brass 8 day movement which has been oiled and keeps excellent time, striking the hour and half on a silvery toned bell. On the back of the movement is a signature, "A. D. Mougin, Deux Medailles."
All three pieces are finished on the back because they were traditionally placed in front of a mirror over a fireplace mantel. The richly grained green marble is excellent with only minor rough spots at the edges. There are touchups and repairs to the spelter or pewter-like alloy metal work, see photos.
This elegant French clock set dates from the 1890's. The clock measures 14" wide, 7" deep and 25" tall. Both candelabras are 10" x 10" and 24" tall.
