Custom made about 1900 for a collection of Indian artifacts, this 58 drawer collector's cabinet is in superb condition. Although unsigned, we have a 1987 letter from Edward P. Hamilton at age 91, detailing the history of this solid oak cabinet.
Expertly crafted by his "Hamilton Company" of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, the concern was a renowned maker of high quality specialty furniture for dentists, architects, engineers and the printing trade.
This display cabinet has an upper section with angled original wavy glass doors that lock. Inside, 5 shelves adjust on iron pegs.
The separate lower cabinet has a removable center panel that locks both doors securely. Behind are three banks of different size drawers. Interior measurements of the left bank are 13 x 10 1/2 x 3/8" deep, the center bank are 13" x 11" x 1 3/4" deep, and the right bank are 13" x 11" x 2 3/4" deep.
The lustrous finish is excellent on mostly quarter sawn oak, there are hand carved details and "spoon" carving, characteristic of the Eastlake period. Inside is finished in a golden color.
Dimensions of this remarkable American made antique are 44" wide, 18" deep and 74" tall.
