Hand made about 1790 by a skilled country carpenter, a solid tiger and curly maple Federal period secretary desk is in beautiful condition. Unpretentious but expertly crafted, the shimmering grain has wonderful patina, the golden finish is very fine with enough wear and mars for a little character.
Top and sides are joined with exposed dovetail joints at the corners. The drop front is cut from a single board, and rests on pull-out supports. There are secret compartments in the cherry interior, with tiny hand dovetailed drawers.
Larger lower drawers have walnut sides with hand-cut dovetails and chamfered bottoms. The embossed brasses appear original. Square nails secure the hand-sawn back boards on this New England antique furniture.
Size is 40" wide, 21" deep, 44" tall and the writing surface is 32" above the floor.
