An authentic Empire period secretary desk has a bookcase top and is cherry with "bird's eye" maple panels and mahogany banding. Entirely hand-crafted about 1835 and said to be from New England, the glowing finish is very fine with exceptionally warm patina and color.
There are mars at the edges for a little character. Drawers have beautiful tiny hand-cut dovetails. Upper doors have ribbed panels. Behind are adjustable shelves that slide in grooves above exquisite tiny drawers and cubicles.
The writing surface flips open onto pull-out supports. Supple saddle leather has natural markings and irregularities. Square nail heads are visible on the hand-planed backside.
Spiral columns and the graceful crown are well proportioned on this truly radiant American antique furniture. Dimensions are 46" wide, 21" deep, 6' 7" tall, and the desk angles up from 33" high at the front edge when opened.
