Exquisitely hand made of mahogany in the eastern U.S. mid to late 1800's, this exceptional little desk and bookcase reflects the late Federal or Sheraton Period. The mahogany is accented with rosewood banding and matched flame grain panels, the finish has gorgeous patina and absolutely glows. The brasses appear original and are engraved with 13 stars and the American motto, "E Pluribus Unum." Drawers have hand dovetailed pine sides and hand chamfered bottoms.
Behind the glass doors, a shelf is adjustable by sliding into different slots, below are cubbyholes. The bookcase lifts off for transport. The writing surface flips open onto wooden supports, and has a gold tooled leather surface. The back of the desk is old but not original. There are the usual shrinkage cracks from age, and this piece is very solid and sturdy. This is a wonderful sophisticated Sheraton style piece in really fine condition, and is very usable. Size is 37" wide, 20" deep and 70" tall, the writing surface is 31" above the floor.
