Papier Mache 1850's Antique English Pearl Inlaid Lap or Travel Desk

A wonderful example of the "papier mache" craze in England this travel lap desk or "laptop" of its day has genuine gold leaf painting and inlaid mother of pearl and abalone inlay work. It dates from the 1850's.

The original finish is a work of art with significant wear and crazing or crackling from age for antique character as shown. The lock is incomplete, the velvet writing surface with a gold tooled leather border inside appears original. There are compartments for inkwells and pens plus stationery underneath.

Measurements of this antique box closed are 10" long, 13" wide and 3 1/2" tall, open size is 13" x 20."
