A wonderful large bookcase or dowry display cupboard is hand-carved of solid oak with lion heads, musicians, angels and griffins. Remarkable artistry in high relief, this castle-scale furniture has a wonderful old finish in very fine condition.
Probably a dowry piece descending with a family's daughters, it was intended to display her pewter, platters and other heirlooms. We also have a photo of it as a stately bookcase.
This historic antique from about 1870 disassembles for moving. Old wavy glass in the lower doors is picturesque. There are losses to the three charming musician sculptures in the base cabinet - see photos. Deep moldings and spiral columns are impressive.
Measurements of this monumental piece are 7'2" wide, 21" deep, 9'4" tall and the base cabinet is 37" high. The top three shelves are 7" deep and have plate moldings. The two lower shelves are 13 1/2" deep, one doesn't go all the way to the back and is 10" deep.
