An authentic Empire period desk from about 1790 has a cylinder or barrel roll top that "automatically" opens when the writing surface is pulled out.
Every square inch of the mahogany exterior is inlaid with satinwood marquetry in floral designs with birds. Hand-crafted in Holland, this marvelous desk was then shipped to skilled artisans in the Dutch East Indies for the addition of delicate marquetry, and returned to Europe. The old finish glows with wonderful warm patina.
With considerable antique "character," there are mars, shrinkage separations and touchups, see photos. When the desk is opened, there are "secret" drawers inside, plus a large swivel tray for inkwells and pens. Large lower drawers have solid oak sides and chamfered bottoms with hand cut dovetail joinery. Brass hardware with cupid heads appears original. The sleek and elegant design is magnificent on this historic furniture, recalling an age when Holland was a world power.
Measurements are 4' 8" wide, 26" deep, 45 1/2" tall and the writing desk is 31 1/2" high.
