An outstanding American Empire secretary desk with bookcase top has Gothic arched wavy glass doors, and dates from about 1835.
Beautiful mahogany with matched flame grain drawer fronts, the finish is excellent with warm patina. The top is inscribed for shipping, from Quincy, Ill, Rec'd in St. Louis, and bound for New Orleans. Drawers have hand-cut dovetails, the back is hand-planed and attached with square nails.
There is lots of character - various shrinkage separations, chips and mars. The flip-open writing surface has a leather top with pen and ink compartments - it is rests on pull-out supports. Deeply turned feet and tapered columns are dramatic. The upper bookcase lifts off for easier moving.
Dimensions of this historic and stately antique furniture are 3'11" wide, 20" deep and 6'4" tall, the writing surface slopes up from 33 1/2" to 36" high.
