At an extraordinary fourteen feet tall, this monumental French Gothic Revival cabinet is a room-defining work of 19th-century decorative art. Commissioned for a château outside Paris, it is signed by celebrated sculptor-cabinetmaker Jean-Paul Mazaroz, whose prize-winning carved walnut buffet was acquired by Napoleon III for his study at the Château de Saint-Cloud. Its soaring cathedral-like crest, intricate hand carving, and massive solid-walnut construction give it the presence of a permanent interior rather than an ordinary piece of furniture.
Jean-Paul Mazaroz, 1823–1900, was one of the leading French sculptor-cabinetmakers of the Second Empire. Trained as a wood sculptor, he operated one of Paris’s foremost workshops for elaborately carved furniture, employing over 600 people. His work received international recognition at the great 19th-century exhibitions, and he was awarded a silver medal at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle, and furnished the royal courts at Madrid, St. Petersburg and Constantinople.
Size is 87" wide, 18" deep and 168" tall. When disassembled, crest is 37.5" tall, middle section is 90.5" tall and base is 40" tall.
