Brittany Carved Antique King Size Bed

This antique bed from Brittany dates from the 1890's and has been adapted to fit a modern king size mattress.
A courting scene, artistically sculpted in high relief in solid oak and chestnut depicts traditional folk garb with wooden shoes on the footboard.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand- carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
The deep brown finish is excellent on this spectacular heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry.
6' 10" wide, 7' long, the headboard is 5'8" tall, the footboard is 34" tall.
